Restoration - Phase 1B
Phase 1B of the restoration of the Cotswold Canals covers the section of the Stroudwater Navigation between Saul Junction (Walk Bridge), with connection to the national waterways network, and 'The Ocean' in Stonehouse. This is the point where the Phase 1A restoration section starts.
The length of the Phase 1B restoration project is approximately 3.8 miles.
Despite the relatively short distance, there are some significant challenges to overcome. These include obstructions to the canal route caused by the M5, the A38 and a main-line railway. The M5, often seen as the most difficult of these, will probably be overcome by using an existing river bridge (River Frome) which is close to the original canal line.
Phase 1B restoration will include:
- 3.8 miles of canal
- re-instatement of about 1000m of infilled canal
- new route under M5
- construction of new road bridge for A38
- construction of new railway bridge at Stonehouse
- construction of one new lock
- restoration of a further 6 locks (some already partly or fully restored)
Funding
Currently there is insufficient funding for all the planned Phase 1B restoration activities.
